Lauren Marie Tierney is a English and Media joint honors student at Leeds Trinity University.

She first became interested in the media industry when a production started in the youth centre she used to attend, the Greenhouse Multi-Cultural Play and Arts Project. She then joined the production in The Greenhouse Youth Project to help create four short films. First Light – the UK Film Council’s initiative for young people funded this. This involved herself experience everything from creating storyboards and scripts to casting actors as well as becoming a director, producer, camera and sound operators and editor. The production was announced the Rotunda winner for the short film, The Chin Snapper, at Liverpool Young People’s Film Awards showcase event at FACT.

She then went on to study at The City of Liverpool College – The Arts Centre for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production. This course provided a broad foundation for a range of careers in the media industry which helped her achieve what was needed for University as she is adaptable and assured in many roles. In this course she learned a lot about the industry such as the work that is needed to be put in when creating a production and what this entails. She became confident in using equipment needed to create these productions such as the Sony NX5, Canon 550D, sound kits, radio microphones and the other paraphernalia that is needed such as tripods, lenses, etc. She also used Final Cut Pro frequently in this course when editing footage into the final piece of work. Photoshop is also something she has became proficient in using throughout the course.

She dedicates her extracurricular time to develop her skills by volunteering herself for other productions, an example of this is when she joined a production commissioned by for the Lord Mayor of Liverpool for the event where the college was being awarded freedom of the city. This involved creating a stop motion animation with photographs she had taken across the college campus. She has also worked on a live recording of a theatre production of Shakespeare’s play Antony and Cleopatra.
